HDA Announces 2015 National President
Dr. Balderas was born and raised in San Antonio and along the U.S. / Mexico border in Eagle Pass, Texas and to a migrant family who worked in the fields of South Texas and the Mid Western states especially Michigan. These experiences directly influenced his perspective on the magnitude and serious healthcare needs of migrants and ultimately led to his career choice. “I have found that when you care enough to share yourself with less fortunate communities, disguised blessings come your way especially when they are expressed by humble hearts with grateful smiles. This to me, is the true reward from a profession that so richly provides.”
Dr. Balderas has been a faculty member at the UTHSC for 20 years. He earned his Bachelor’s degree from St. Mary’s University in San Antonio in 1980 and his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the UTHSC Dental School at San Antonio in 1984 and a Master’s degree in Public Health Administration from the UT – Houston Health Science Center School of Public Health, San Antonio campus in 2005.
For more than 20 years, Dr. Balderas has worked with dental students in a mobile van unit to provide care to children of migrant farm working families, mostly Hispanic. Dr. Balderas is the 25th President of the Hispanic Dental Association. The Greater San Antonio Hispanic Dental Association will host the 25th Anniversary Conference on August 14-16, 2015 in San Antonio, Texas.
