The Hispanic Dental Association
Celebrates 2011 Dia del Dentista!
Greater Chicago Hispanic Dental Association
In celebration of Dia del Dentista, Dr. Gene Romo, Jr. (President of the Greater Chicago HDA) decided to surprise his patients. On this day, Dr. Romo shared the meaning of the Day with each of his patients. Most patients did not know about the Day of the Dentist. Dr. Romo’s office gave every patient an oral hygiene kit, a balloon with their office logo, and a gift certificate for a free meal at a neighborhood restaurant. They gave away 50 gift certificates to patients, and all were ecstatic to receive such attention. It was a wonderful day to be a dentist!
Greater Houston Hispanic Dental Association
The Greater Houston Hispanic Dental Association (GHHDA) participated in a Dia del Dentista community service project on Saturday February 5, 2011. GHHDA joined forces with San Jose Clinic in Houston, Texas to treat children and adult patients. Patients received comprehensive dental care including prophylaxis, exams, fillings, periodontal cleanings, and root canals. GHHDA looks forward to participating in many more Dia del Dentista community service projects that commemorate Saint Apollonia and Dentistry.
Ohio State University HDA Student Chapter
The Ohio State University HDA Student Chapter celebrated Dia del Dentista by holding a free fluoride varnish and screening clinic at the Ohio Hispanic Coalition after school program in Columbus, Ohio. The supplies were graciously donated by the OSU College of Dentistry and six dental students applied the varnish and performed oral screenings under the supervision of our faculty advisor, Dr. Henry Fischbach. Each child also received an oral hygiene kit and guidance on brushing and flossing. The outreach program had a very positive response from the children as well as their parents, who had the opportunity to ask questions about their sons and daughters’ oral health.
San Diego / Baja Hispanic Dental Association
The bi-national San Diego / Baja HDA Chapter celebrated Dia del Dentista with continuing education about Denmat’s “Snap Smile”. Professionals from both the U.S. and Mexico attended.
Dr. Glenda Urias-Sesteaga, Chapter President and dentist in Tijuana, Mexico, surprised the Chapter with a video clip to help celebrate el “Dia del Dentista” by sharing the story of Saint Apollonia and the history of Dentistry in the old Hispanic civilization.

Massachusetts Hispanic Dental Association
On February 8, 2011, the Tufts University HDA Student Chapter along with members from the Massachusetts Hispanic Dental Association celebrated their first Annual “Dia del Dentista” social event. Approximately 45 members were in attendance, including Tufts Faculty and Faculty Advisor, Dr. Aidee Nieto-Herman. Attendees enjoyed food and music from the Hispanic culture.
