Launch of Washington, DC Area Chapter of HDA
WASHINGTON, DC. July 23, 2014— The DC Area Chapter of the Hispanic Dental Association will be launched Thursday, July 24th. HDA and Dr. Oswald I. Cameron-Morales, DDS, Chapter President 2014-2015 organized the Launch. Around 30 prominent local dental hygientists, practitioners, and students are to attend the event featuring networking, food, and fun to celebrate the new chapter. Membership is not required to attend this event, but members who do gather together know they do so with a common vision: to eliminate oral health disparities in the Hispanic community.
“After many years practicing dentistry in the Washington DC Metro area and involvement in the HDA and numerous dental missions to Central and South America, I encouraged my colleagues to bring the mission of the HDA to the local needs of the Washington DC area.” Many immigrants and underserved families find it difficult to access oral care due to lack of oral health literacy, high cost (access to affordable care and insurance) and language barriers. “We are here to address those needs with the help of area dentists, hygienists, dental assistants and students who will join our chapter.” – Oswald Cameron-Morales, DDS
The Hispanic Dental Association has over forty affiliate chapters nationwide, including over 30 student chapters, with several additional groups in the application process. Each of these groups is unique in character, but all share the same dedication to serving the Hispanic community. Some chapters are located at dental schools, some are composed entirely of dental professionals, but all are dedictated to living the mission of S.E.A.L. – Service, Education, Advocacy, and Leadership. Since 1990, HDA has brought together hundreds of oral health professionals committed to eliminating oral health disparities among Hispanics and has helped provide oral health care to over 9000 underserved people in the last year alone.
The newly formed Washington, DC Area chapter will be joining the list of established chapters in Austin, TX, Chicago, IL, Los Angeles, CA, San Diego/Baja, CA, Houston, TX, San Antonio, TX, Dallas, TX, Boston, MA, New York, NY, and Yakima, WA.
