The “Second Annual Dance for a Kid’s Smile” Zumbathon will be held on Saturday September 6th, 2014 from 9:30 am to 11:30 am at The Legacy Shops Plaza in Bishop Park, 7100 Bishop, Plano, TX 75024.
The event is sponsored by the North Texas Hispanic Dental Association (NTHDA), a professional chapter of the Hispanic Dental Association, with the proceeds funding “the Happy Tooh/El Diente Feliz,” an organization that provides free Dental Care to children in need and without dental insurance in the Dallas/Fort Worth area.
9 million children in the US don’t have medical insurance, while 23 million don’t have dental insurance. According to the National Institute of Health, 80% of tooth decay is found in 25% of children, and according to the Center for Disease Control, almost 1/4 of children ages 2-11 have untreated cavities. Most of the untreated children come from low income families.
Proper oral health is instrumental to the maintenance of a healthy life, and for children the lack of it can get in the way of eating, sleeping, and even attending school. Because of dental health-related issues, upwards of 51 million school hours have been lost each year according to Oral Health in America, the May 2000 Surgeon general’s report, with poorer children suffering 10 times as much compared to children from higher-income families.
Join the fight to give everyone a chance to have a healthy smile – come out to the second annual Zumbathon on September 6th and dance for a child.
