HDA Leaders to be Honored by the Association of Hispanics Healthcare Executives for 10 Years of Collaboration

Health Equity, Latinos & Digital Media: Bridging the Communication Gap. Local & National Health Executives Address Health Equity, Monday, June 16, 2014, at NY Academy of Medicine, 103rd St & 5th Ave, in NYC: NYS Attorney General and NYC Council Speaker to Address Health Leaders

New York, NY – The Association of Hispanics Healthcare Executives (AHHE), www.ahhe.org, and elected officials, policy makers, and health care leaders, are dedicated to obtaining better health outcomes and equity for the Latino community. The combined costs of health inequalities and premature death in the nation cost $1.24 trillion between 2003 and 2006.  Patients from racial and ethnic minority communities, who bear a disproportionate share of our nation’s health problems, spent nearly $230 billion in excess medical care costs. Factors that contribute to a community’s health are individual habits, environment, education, awareness, heath literacy, jobs, etc. For example, the Bronx was recently ranked last because of poor health.

At AHHE’s 2014 Annual Healthcare Diversity Awards, chaired by Luis A. Vazquez of the Long Island Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and co-chaired by Lee H. Perlman, President of GNYHA Ventures and Executive Vice President/Administration-Greater NY Hospital Association, health care leaders will hear from Keynote Speaker and Honoree, Eric T. Schneiderman, New York State Attorney General, who will be addressing “Health Care Justice” at the New York Academy of Medicine on June 16, 2014 from 6:00pm to 9:30pm. The Attorney General will be introduced by NYC Council Speaker, the Honorable Melissa Mark-Viverito, who will also be making some remarks. Lynda Baquero, Consumer Reporter, at NBC 4 New York, is serving as Master of Ceremonies. AHHE, and its Roundtable, have become a major Hispanic health resource at public forums and on the internet by establishing its presence online where Hispanics frequently turn to for authoritative health resources.  AHHE has a presence on the main social networks, such as Twitter, Facebook, Linkedin and Youtube.

The Latino community is the largest and youngest minority group in the United States, yet it is one of the minority groups that face the biggest challenges in the health care area, including highest rates of preventable diseases and a high percentage of Latinos are uninsured. Health care costs in the United States account for 18% of GNP.  Therefore, a more efficient way to address Latino health care challenges can positively affect all Americans. According to George Zeppenfeldt, AHHE National President, “Efficient health care management not only involves managing scarce resources, but it also involves understanding the patients’ culture and demographics. There is a growing need to identify mentors for Latinos to achieve leadership positions in the health care workforce and spearhead minority health policy because Latino professionals are a critical component in addressing and communicating the health needs of this community.” The 9.2 million uninsured Hispanics, ages 25-35, are also extensive users of digital media who will be seeking insurance coverage. Thus, more than ever, insurers, HMOs/managed care and hospital groups need to be proactive in the provision of digital content that is culturally resonant for its new Hispanic audience. To accomplish these goals of enrollment it is necessary to collaborate with Hispanic-led community organizations to educate and gain access to, and the trust of, incoming Hispanic patients, effectively communicate strategies that connect culturally with this growing and thriving population, and use mobile technology to address this population.

 

The honorees this year include Corporate Visionary of the Year, Google, Inc., ”Up and Coming” Executives of the Year, Kimlee Roldan-Sanchez, MPA, Vice President & Chief Administrative Officer, NewYork-Presbyterian Healthcare System and Regulatory Planning and Wilson Davila, MBA, RT, Assistant Vice President, Radiology/Cardiovascular Services, Lutheran Medical Center, and the Roundtable of Professional Hispanic Health Associations, whose members are the Association of Hispanic Healthcare Executives, Association of Hispanic Mental Health Professionals, Dominican Medical Association, Hispanic Dental Association, Latino Medical Student Association, National Association of Hispanic Nurses, National Hispanic Chamber of Commerce on Health and the National Hispanic Medical Association in celebration of a decade of collaboration.

Attendees will be health care leaders, Hispanic chamber of commerce leaders, elected officials and other policy experts. Colgate-Palmolive and the Hispanic Dental Association Empower Hispanic Families to Achieve Healthy Smiles During “Oral Health Month”

NEW YORK, June 4, 2014 /PRNewswire/ — Today, Colgate-Palmolive Company joined the Hispanic Dental Association (HDA) to celebrate the launch of Colgate’s “Oral Health Month”. From now until June 30, this annual campaign will help fight the poor oral health epidemic by educating Hispanic consumers and their families about the importance of proper oral care.

In partnership with the HDA, this campaign will strongly target the Hispanic community through bilingual oral health education materials and activities. According to the National Institutes of Health, Latinos have the highest rate of untreated tooth decay and the lowest level of dental visits of all racial and ethnic groups in the U.S.1 Due to language barriers, lack of familiarity and low dental insurance coverage levels, our Latino population continues to experience difficulty in accessing oral healthcare services and education.
